Scarf Edge Finishes: Rolled Hem, ベビーヘム, Overlock, Fringe

Which edge finish should a scarf have? Match the edge to the fabric. Sheer silk and chiffon suit a rolled hem or a baby hem. Light to mid-weight wovens suit a baby hem or an overlock edge. Fringe and frayed edges suit loose wovens such as wool, viscose or linen blends. Then write the edge into the order, not only the sample.

The edge is the part a customer touches first, and it decides how the scarf survives washing. Below is each finish in plain terms, then what to put in your order.

What is a rolled hem on a scarf?

A rolled hem turns the raw edge over on itself into a very thin tube and stitches it in place. The result is a soft, slightly round edge with almost no visible stitching on the face of the scarf. It can be rolled and stitched by hand, rolled with a special presser foot on a sewing machine, or made on an overlock machine set for a rolled edge.

The fabric guide from EOS ファブリック describes a hand-rolled scarf edge that is left “slightly puffed”, and warns that trimming the raw edge too close before rolling can let the fabric fray. That is the main watch-out: a rolled hem needs enough fabric inside the roll to hold.

A rolled hem needs a fabric that is light and soft enough to curl. Stiff or heavy fabric will not form a fine roll. For silk scarves, 見る the process of manufacturing custom silk scarves for where finishing sits in the process.

What is a baby hem, and how is it different?

A baby hem is a very narrow folded hem. The edge is folded, stitched close to the fold, trimmed, then folded again and stitched a second time. It is flat, not round, and it shows a fine line of straight stitching on both faces.

The sewing pattern company Simplicity says a designer hem “is also referred to as a baby hem or a very narrow hem” and names chiffon, satin and organza as suitable fabrics. EOS Fabrics describes the same fold, ステッチ, trim and fold-again method for garment and scarf edges.

要するに: a rolled hem is a soft tube, a baby hem is a flat double fold. Both work on light fabrics. A baby hem gives a crisper edge, but its stitch line is visible, so thread colour matters more than on a hand roll.

What is an overlock (メロウ) 角?

An overlock stitch ラップする thread over the cut edge of the fabric. によると Wikipedia’s article on overlock, the machine can trim the edge as it sews, it uses loopers instead of a bobbin, and the stitch is also called “overedging”, “merrowing” or “serging”. The name “merrow” comes from the Merrow Machine Company, which built early overedge machines. Merrow’s own page for its rolled edge crochet machine says it is used to edge items such as blankets and shawls.

On a scarf, an overlock edge looks like a narrow band of dense thread along the edge. Set tight, with the fabric rolled inside the stitch, it is called a rolled overlock or merrow edge. The thread can match the fabric or be a contrast colour.

EOS Fabrics suggests serging a test piece first, because a rolled edge can “pull right off” if the settings do not suit the fabric. On a very loose or slippery weave, the stitch can lose its grip on the fabric threads. So wash-test the sample edge; do not only look at it.

When does fringe make sense?

Fringe suits scarves woven from yarns with some body: ウール, アクリル, ビスコース, cotton or blends. A woven fringe is made from the yarns of the cloth itself. They are secured close to the body of the scarf, then left loose, knotted or twisted into small bundles.

The securing step is what keeps fringe from unravelling into the body of the scarf. The weaving guide from Jane Stafford Textiles describes hemstitching the edge in small bundles and knotting the bundle ends, with knots “evenly matched in length”. The same guide warns that a long time in a hot dryer can pull loose yarns off the fabric, and it suggests only a very short tumble to soften the fringe.

Fringe adds length and movement. It also adds a measurement to control: the fringe length, and how much difference you accept between bundles.

What is a frayed edge, and is it a real finish?

A frayed edge is a short fringe made by pulling cross threads out of a woven fabric up to a stitched line. The stitched line is the finish. それがないと, the edge keeps fraying in use and in the wash. The sewing blog by Doina Alexei notes that almost all woven fabrics fray when cut, so the aim is to keep fraying contained.

A frayed edge works only on wovens. Knit fabrics do not form a fringe this way. It looks relaxed and natural on linen, cotton gauze and loose wool. At a square corner the frayed threads run in two directions, so a small gap at each corner is part of the look. Agree on that gap before bulk, so nobody reads it as a defect.

Which edge suits which fabric?

仕上げる 見て 最高の生地 Durability and wash behaviour Watch-outs
ロールヘム (hand or machine) 柔らかい, ラウンド, nearly invisible edge シルクシフォン, ジョーゼット, クレープデシン, light voile Holds well when enough fabric is inside the roll Too little fabric in the roll can fray; heavy fabric will not roll finely
Baby hem Flat, パリッとした, fine stitch line サテン, シフォン, organza, light cotton and viscose Stable; the double fold encloses the raw edge Stitch line is visible; thread colour and straightness show
Overlock / merrow edge Narrow band of dense thread; can be a contrast colour Light to mid-weight wovens and knits, ポリエステル, ビスコース Firm when the stitch suits the fabric Can pull off loose or slippery weaves; loose thread ends at corners
Fringe Loose, knotted or twisted yarn ends ウール, アクリル, ビスコース, cotton and blends Needs a secured base; long hot tumble drying can pull yarns loose Uneven lengths; tangling in the wash
Frayed edge Short, カジュアル, threaded edge Loose-weave linen, cotton gauze, ウール (woven only) Stops at the stitched line if the line is secure Gaps at corners; keeps fraying if the stop line is missing

How do edges behave in washing?

Washing tests the edge hardest. On the washed sample, チェック:

  • Rolled and baby hems: check that the roll or fold has not opened and that no raw threads poke out.
  • Overlock edges: check that the thread still grips the fabric along its full length and at each corner.
  • Fringe: check that the bundles are still even and the knots have not slipped.
  • Frayed edges: check that fraying stopped at the stitched line.

Also check the finished size. A hem can pull the edge in, and fabric can shrink, so the washed scarf may not match the size on the spec. Put the care instruction you intend to print on the label into the wash test, so the test copies real use.

What should the order say about the edge?

“Rolled hem” can mean a hand roll, a machine roll or a rolled overlock. Each looks different. If the order names only the word, the bulk may not match the sample. Write the edge as a short specification. Put it in your tech pack as well; ~に関する当社のガイド メーカー向けの技術パックを作成する方法 shows where finishing details go.

A short checklist:

  1. Edge type: name the method, not just the look: hand-rolled hem, machine rolled hem, baby hem, rolled overlock, knotted fringe, twisted fringe or frayed edge.
  2. Hem width or fringe length: give your own measurement, and say whether fringe length is measured from the stitched line or from the body of the scarf.
  3. Thread colour: matched to the ground colour, matched to the print, or a named contrast colour. のために プリントスカーフ, say which colour the thread should match.
  4. Corner treatment: folded and mitred, rolled through, or stitched over; for fringe and frayed edges, say how the corner gap should look.
  5. Tolerance on finished size: state the finished size after hemming and the plus or minus you will accept.
  6. Wash test on the sample: ask for the approved sample to be washed to your care label, then compare edge and size against your spec.
  7. Reference sample: keep a sealed approved sample, and say in the order that bulk must match it.

If your scarves are printed, the edge also affects where the print ends. A border design needs the hem width agreed before the artwork is final. 私たちのページ digital printed scarves covers printing; the edge spec should sit beside the artwork.
