For a beach cover-up that meets salt water, pool chlorine and strong sun, polyester is the toughest fibre: it absorbs little water, resists bleaching chemicals and loses strength to sunlight more slowly than nylon. 면, linen and viscose feel cooler but weaken under chlorine and sun. Whatever the fibre, a fresh-water rinse matters most.
This guide covers what each exposure does to the fibre itself. Colour fading in the sun is a separate subject, 덮여 색상이 번지는 이유와 색상이 유지되는 이유.
What does salt water do to a beach cover-up fabric?
Salt water leaves salt behind in a beach cover-up when it dries. Sunbrella notes that as salt water dries on fabric, it can leave a salt residue, and that a rinse in clean water removes it. The salt does not attack cotton, 리넨, 비스코스, polyester or nylon chemically. The damage is physical:
- Stiffness. Dried salt sits between the yarns. A soft voile or viscose cover-up then feels harsh and stiff until it is rinsed.
- Abrasion. The marine fabric supplier Trivantage describes dried salt crystals in the weave acting like sandpaper as the fabric moves, chafing the fibres. On a cover-up, this rubbing matters most at folds, seams and anywhere the garment rubs against a bag strap or the body.
- Damp that does not leave. Gore-Tex explains that salt attracts moisture, and advises regular rinsing in fresh water. A salty cover-up packed into a bag can stay damp. Wikipedia’s linen article names mildew among the things that damage linen.
Salt water also corrodes plain steel. 스냅, rings and buckles on a cover-up should be brass, rustproof alloy, plastic or shell.
Does pool chlorine damage a beach cover-up?
Pool chlorine damages some cover-up fibres slowly and leaves others almost untouched. Chlorine is an oxidising agent. Pool water holds far less of it than laundry bleach, so the harm builds up over many wears rather than in one swim.
- 면, 린넨과 비스코스 are all made of cellulose. Wikipedia’s article on oxidised cellulose lists hypochlorous acid, the active form of chlorine in water, among the oxidants that react with cellulose. Wikipedia’s bleach article notes that bleaches can weaken or damage natural materials such as fibres and cloth. Wikipedia’s linen article names bleach among the things that damage linen.
- 명주 is the least suitable. Wikipedia’s silk article states that chlorine bleach will destroy silk fabrics.
- 나일론 is vulnerable. The webbing maker Unirope says nylon slings are not suitable for use with bleaching agents. 에이 Korean study of swimsuit fabrics found a nylon blend had weak colour fastness to chlorinated water, while the other fabric tested was satisfactory.
- 폴리에스테르 holds up best. Unirope states that the oxidising agents and bleaching treatments normally used by the textile industry do not degrade polyester fibre.
Stretch yarns and elastic are the weakest part of any garment in a pool. That is covered in Zip의 문제점, 버튼, 스냅, 조임끈과 고무줄.
What does strong sun do to beach cover-up fibres?
Strong sun weakens the fibres of a beach cover-up, not only its colour. Ultraviolet light breaks the long molecules inside a fibre. 그만큼 Canadian Conservation Institute lists weakening and eventual fragmentation of cotton, silk and wool among the effects of ultraviolet light, and notes that ultraviolet light causes yellowing in materials. Beach use is harsh: Trivantage points out that reflection from the sea surface intensifies ultraviolet exposure.
- 명주 is the most delicate. Wikipedia notes that silk can be weakened by too much sunlight, and that it is yellowed by perspiration.
- 나일론 loses strength in sun. Unirope states that nylon fibres are affected by ultraviolet rays and sunlight, with considerable strength loss over time.
- 폴리에스테르 resists sun better. Canvas Etc. describes polyester canvas as highly resistant to ultraviolet degradation, and untreated nylon as less resistant. A tent maker found in its own tests that the gap is smaller than commonly believed, and that fabric thickness changes the result. So treat the polyester lead as real but modest.
- 면, 린넨과 비스코스 are cellulose, and cellulose weakens and can yellow with long sun exposure. A white cotton cover-up shows the yellowing first.
Which beach cover-up fabric rinses and dries fastest?
Polyester rinses and dries fastest, because it holds the least water. Wikipedia describes polyester as hydrophobic, with low water absorption. Nylon takes up more water than polyester, according to Canvas Etc. Among natural fibres, Wikipedia says linen dries faster than cotton. Viscose holds a lot of water, 그리고 Wikipedia’s rayon article notes that regular viscose has low durability, especially when wet. A wet viscose kaftan or pareo should not be wrung hard or hung by one corner.
Drying matters for two reasons. A cover-up that stays wet holds salt and chlorine against the fibre for longer. It also spends longer in the sun while damp. 빛, open fabrics such as voile, crepe and gauze dry faster than heavy cotton terry, whatever the fibre.
How do cotton, 리넨, 비스코스, polyester and nylon compare for a beach cover-up?
| 섬유 | Salt water | Pool chlorine | Strong sun (fibre strength) | Rinsing and drying |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 면 | Stiffens when salt dries in it; mildew risk if packed damp | Slowly weakened by oxidation | Weakens and yellows over long exposure | Absorbs a lot; dries slowly |
| 리넨 | Stiffens; mildew risk if packed damp | Damaged by bleach | Weakens over long exposure | Dries faster than cotton |
| 비스코스 / 레이온 | Stiffens; soft drape lost until rinsed | Slowly weakened by oxidation | Weakens over long exposure | Absorbs a lot; weaker when wet |
| 폴리에스테르 | Little effect once rinsed | Not degraded by normal bleaching agents | Better resistance than nylon | Absorbs little; dries fastest |
| 나일론 | Little effect once rinsed | Vulnerable to bleaching agents | Considerable strength loss over time | Absorbs more than polyester |
| 명주 | Stiffens | Destroyed by chlorine bleach | Weakened by too much sun; yellows | Needs gentle handling |

What should a buyer specify for a beach cover-up that meets salt water and sun?
A buyer should specify the fibre, the fabric construction and the tests to run on that exact fabric. A fibre name alone does not predict performance.
- Fibre content in full. Write the exact fibre and blend. A cotton and polyester blend behaves differently from pure cotton.
- Fabric type and weight. Name the weave or knit, for example voile, crepe or gauze. Approve the weight on a swatch, because a heavier fabric holds more water and dries more slowly.
- Colour fastness to sea water. Ask the factory to arrange a colour-fastness to sea water test on the dyed or printed fabric. It shows whether colour runs or stains when the garment is wet with salt water.
- Colour fastness to chlorinated water. If the cover-up will be worn by a pool, ask for a colour-fastness to chlorinated water test as well.
- Strength after light exposure. For fabric that will see a lot of sun, ask for a tear or tensile strength test before and after exposure to artificial sunlight in a lab. This measures fibre weakening, which a colour test does not show.
- Rustproof trims. State brass, rustproof alloy, plastic or shell for snaps, rings and buckles.
- Care label. Ask for a label that says to rinse in fresh water after the sea or pool, and to dry in shade.
