A top-of-production (맨 위) sample is a garment taken from the first pieces sewn on the bulk production line. The PP sample shows that a style can be made correctly. The TOP sample shows that the bulk line is actually making it correctly: bulk fabric lot, line stitching, size measurements, 씻다, trims and packing.
What is a TOP sample in garment production?
A TOP sample is a finished garment pulled from the first output of the bulk sewing line, after bulk cutting and sewing have started. It is not made specially. It is an ordinary production piece, chosen to stand for the bulk. WAVE PLM describes the TOP sample as a garment pulled from the active sewing line once bulk production has begun, and compares it against the approved PP sample (WAVE PLM). Online Clothing Study notes that a TOP sample can show the final packed piece, with hang tags, folding and polybag (Online Clothing Study).
How is a TOP sample different from a PP sample?
The PP sample is made before bulk starts; the TOP sample is taken after bulk starts. A pre-production (PP) sample is sewn on approved bulk fabric and trims, so the buyer can sign off the construction before cutting begins. Depending on the factory, the PP sample may be sewn in the sample room or by a few skilled operators. Either way, it is a small, careful make. WAVE PLM puts the difference simply: the PP sample tests capability, and the TOP sample tests execution (WAVE PLM).
| PP 샘플 | TOP 샘플 | |
|---|---|---|
| When | Before bulk cutting | After bulk sewing starts |
| 다음으로 제작됨 | Bulk fabric and trims, cut singly or in a small lay | Bulk fabric lot, cut in the bulk lay |
| Made by | Sample room or selected operators | Regular line operators at line speed |
| Checks | 건설, 맞다, materials and trims before bulk; becomes the standard for bulk | Whether bulk matches the approved PP sample: 그늘, 바느질, 측정, 씻다, 라벨, 포장 |
| What it cannot show | Bulk lot shade, line workmanship, bulk cutting accuracy, bulk wash results, final packing | Consistency across the whole order; that needs final inspection |
What can a TOP sample reveal that a PP sample cannot?
A TOP sample reveals the problems that only appear when the real bulk process runs. These are the main ones.
Bulk fabric lot and shade
The TOP sample is cut from the bulk dye lot, so its shade can be compared with the approved lab dip or strike-off. Different dye lots of the same colour can differ slightly in shade, and a print run can differ from its strike-off. A shade check compares the garment with a reference standard within agreed tolerances, either by instrument (a spectrophotometer) or by trained visual assessment under set light (Racklify).
Line stitching versus sample-room stitching
The TOP sample is sewn by line operators working at production speed, not by a sample maker. WAVE PLM notes that a sample room can make a fine one-off garment that a factory floor at full speed cannot repeat consistently (WAVE PLM). Look at stitch density, 솔기 주름, 실 장력, topstitch straightness, buttonholes and how hems and necklines lie.
Measurements across sizes
Bulk cutting uses graded patterns in a multi-ply lay. Plies can shift, and fabric can relax or shrink after cutting. So the TOP sample should be measured in more than one size, against the graded spec sheet and its tolerances. A PP sample made in a single size cannot show this.
Bulk wash and finish
A wash, softener or enzyme finish run on a full machine load may behave differently from a small sample load. The TOP sample shows the real hand feel, colour change and shrinkage after bulk washing.
Labels and trims as actually applied
On the TOP sample, check the main label, 사이즈 라벨, care label and any country-of-origin label: right content, right position, stitched straight. Check buttons, zips, tapes and embellishments from the bulk delivery, not from the sample batch.
누르기, folding and packing
Ask for the TOP sample to be sent as it will ship: 누르면, folded, tagged and bagged. Then you can check hang tags, 바코드 스티커, fold size, polybag warnings and carton marks before the whole order is packed that way.
What should a buyer check on a TOP sample?
A buyer should check the TOP sample side by side with the approved PP sample, the tech pack and the approved colour standard. A simple checklist:
- Shade against the lab dip or strike-off, under the agreed light source.
- Fabric hand feel, weight and surface after wash.
- Measurements in each size received, against the graded spec and tolerances.
- 바느질, seam strength and finishing at stress points.
- Print or embroidery placement, size and colour.
- Every label: 콘텐츠, placement and wording.
- 트림: correct item, colour and function.
- 누르기, 접는, 태그, polybag and packing method.
A clear tech pack makes this check faster, because every point already has a written standard. 보다 how to create a tech pack for manufacturers.
How should a buyer record TOP sample approval or comments?
Record the TOP sample decision in writing, with one of three results: 승인됨, approved with comments, or rejected. Write it so the factory can act on it without a call.
- Name the style, 색상, size and dye lot of the TOP sample you checked.
- List each comment as one point, with the measurement or photo that shows it.
- Say whether each comment must be fixed in running bulk, or only noted for the next order.
- If rejected, say what must change and whether a new TOP sample is needed.
- Keep the signed TOP sample, or a sealed counter sample, as the reference for final inspection.
What happens if the TOP sample is skipped?
If the TOP sample is skipped, the first real look at bulk comes at final inspection, when the goods are already made. Jing Sourcing notes that not every buyer asks for a TOP sample (Jing Sourcing). But without it, a shade difference, a grading error or a wrong care label can run through the whole order. At final inspection, the choices are narrower: accept, rework or reject finished goods. A TOP sample moves that decision to the point where only a small part of the order has been made.
Where does the TOP sample sit in the sampling sequence?
The TOP sample comes late in a sequence: 프로토 샘플, 샘플에 적합, 사이즈 세트, PP 샘플, TOP 샘플, then final inspection. The earlier samples settle design, fit and grading; the TOP sample is the first look at real bulk; final inspection then checks the finished, packed order.
