Measure the diagonals, not the sides
Checking a bandana by measuring its four sides will pass a rhombus. A square that is a degree or two out of true measures correctly on every side and looks visibly wrong the moment it is folded corner to corner — which is how a bandana is worn, and how it hangs on a peg in a shop. The check that catches it is comparing the two diagonals against each other. On any square accessory that is the measurement worth writing into the inspection sheet, and it is the one most commonly left out of it.
The Hem Is the First Thing a Buyer Inspects
Almost every bandana complaint that survives as far as a claim is about the edge. A narrow double-turn hem is the standard finish: the raw edge is folded twice through a hemming folder so nothing raw is exposed and the border is even all the way round. Two things go wrong with it.
The first is roping — the hem twisting and rippling because a light, mobile cloth is being fed under uneven tension. The correction is machine-side, in feed and presser-foot pressure, not something an operator can hold out by hand. The second is the corners, where two folded hems cross and the layer count under the needle jumps. That build-up is where stitches skip, where the needle deflects, and where a hem begins to unpick in wear. Running the hem as one uninterrupted pass, burying the start and finish inside a fold, and easing pressure over the corner build-up is the difference between a hem that survives washing and one that does not.
Where a softer, more casual edge is wanted, a merrow or overlock finish is faster and gives a distinctive rolled edge — but it leaves the cut edge exposed to abrasion and is not a substitute for a double-turn hem on a garment-quality product. Specify which you want; the two are inspected against different criteria.
Colour Fastness, and Why Dark Bandanas Come Back
A bandana is worn against the neck and against other garments, usually in warm weather. The failure mode is crocking — colour transferring by rubbing, dry or wet — and it is worst exactly where bandanas are darkest and most saturated. A deep indigo or black ground that has not been properly washed off after dyeing will mark a white t-shirt on the first hot day, and the buyer reads that as a defect in the goods rather than as a finishing shortfall upstream. The controls are unglamorous: adequate soaping and washing-off after dyeing, a fixing treatment where the shade demands one, and a rub test run on the approved bulk lot rather than on the strike-off.
Dyestuff selection matters for a second reason. Certain azo dyes can cleave to aryl amines that are restricted for textile articles in the European Union under Annex XVII of the REACH regulation, and an importer is expected to be able to evidence that the goods do not contain them. That is a requirement written into the specification at fabric booking and confirmed by testing at a laboratory the buyer nominates. It is not something any supplier settles by assertion, and we do not ask you to take it on ours.
