Not every black is dischargeable
Discharge printing is the reason a traditional bandana feels like plain cloth rather than a printed panel. Instead of laying opaque ink on top of a dark ground, a discharge paste removes the ground dye where the design sits, so the pattern is içinde the fabric and the hand is unchanged. The constraint buyers usually miss is that discharge only works if the ground was dyed with a dischargeable dyestuff. A black piece-dyed with a sulphur or vat black will not strip cleanly — it moves to a muddy ecru or a khaki cast, never to white — and no amount of paste or extra cure repairs it. Dischargeability is a property of the dye lot, so it has to be specified when the fabric is booked, not discovered on the print table.

Registration across screens
A classic bandana is a multi-screen job: ground, motif, taslak, often a fill. Every additional screen is another opportunity for the register to drift, and the outline screen is where drift becomes visible, because the eye reads a hairline offset as a printing fault instantly. Keeping the outline as the last and tightest screen, and allowing a small overlap beneath it, absorbs the tolerance the machine actually has rather than the tolerance the artwork assumes.
Digital printing removes the registration question altogether and is the right choice for photographic artwork, many-colour designs or short runs. But it lays pigment on the surface, so it cannot reproduce the dyed-through hand of a discharge print on a dark ground. The two are not interchangeable finishes. Choose per design, not per order.
Cutting a Square That Stays Square
The unit drift nobody catches
The two common bandana specifications are 55 X 55 cm and 22 X 22 inches, and buyers routinely treat them as the same size. They are not: twenty-two inches is very nearly a centimetre more than 55 santimetre. On one panel that difference is small; it is still enough to fail a measurement check written to the other unit, and it compounds badly if the print repeat was laid out to one specification and the cutting marker to the other. Fix the unit in the tech pack, state the finished size with its tolerance, and make the print layout and the cutting marker refer to the same document.
Cut oversize, not to size

Running the hem as one uninterrupted pass, burying the start and finish inside a fold, and easing pressure over the corner build-up is the difference between a hem that survives washing and one that does not.
Where a softer, more casual edge is wanted, a merrow or overlock finish is faster and gives a distinctive rolled edge — but it leaves the cut edge exposed to abrasion and is not a substitute for a double-turn hem on a garment-quality product. Specify which you want; the two are inspected against different criteria.
Colour Fastness, and Why Dark Bandanas Come Back
A bandana is worn against the neck and against other garments, usually in warm weather. The failure mode is crocking — colour transferring by rubbing, dry or wet — and it is worst exactly where bandanas are darkest and most saturated. A deep indigo or black ground that has not been properly washed off after dyeing will mark a white t-shirt on the first hot day, and the buyer reads that as a defect in the goods rather than as a finishing shortfall upstream. The controls are unglamorous: adequate soaping and washing-off after dyeing, a fixing treatment where the shade demands one, and a rub test run on the approved bulk lot rather than on the strike-off.
Dyestuff selection matters for a second reason. Certain azo dyes can cleave to aryl amines that are restricted for textile articles in the European Union under Annex XVII of the REACH regulation, and an importer is expected to be able to evidence that the goods do not contain them. That is a requirement written into the specification at fabric booking and confirmed by testing at a laboratory the buyer nominates. It is not something any supplier settles by assertion, and we do not ask you to take it on ours.
