Printed dress styles

  • Maxi and midi dresses: tiered, wrap and gathered-waist shapes that show a print at full length.
  • Shirt dresses: a collar and button front that suit small repeats and stripes.
  • Sundresses and strappy dresses: smocked or shirred bodices for summer ranges.
  • Kaftan-style and tunic dresses: loose shapes that work across sizes.
  • Short and mini dresses: the same print can run in a shorter length for a second price point.

Fabrics that print well

We print dresses on cotton poplin, cotton voile, cotton slub, cotton crepe, viscose, viscose crepe and polyester chiffon. Cotton poplin holds a sharp outline and suits crisp shapes; see our cotton poplin printed dresses. Cotton crepe has a soft, slightly textured face that hides creasing in transit, as in our cotton crepe printed dresses. Viscose and viscose crepe give the richest colour and the most fluid drape. Polyester chiffon is light and sheer and needs a lining; see our polyester chiffon printed dresses.

Print methods

The method changes the look, the colour count and the cost, so choose it with the fabric.

  • Screen printing: flat, saturated colour with a crisp edge, best for repeat styles in larger runs.
  • Digital printing: unlimited colours, photographic detail and placed motifs; our digital printing page explains which fabrics take it.
  • Hand block printing: carved wooden blocks give a slightly irregular, handmade print that buyers look for in summer and resort ranges.
  • Dip-dye and ombre: a colour fade from hem to bodice, alone or over a print. Our guide to specifying dip-dye and ombre garments covers how to brief it.

Print placement and matching

An all-over print needs a decision on matching: at the centre front, the centre back and the side seams, or free-cut. Border and placed prints need the motif marked on the bodice, the sleeve and the hem, so every size carries it in the same place. We grade placed prints across the size range and show you the placement on the sample before bulk cutting.

Sizing and grading

Send your size chart and we grade from it, or ask us to propose one for US, UK or EU sizing. We check the bust, waist, hip and length on more than one size before bulk. For dresses without a print focus, our ladies dresses page covers summer, linen and embroidered styles, and our guide to wholesale summer dresses helps with range planning.

MOQ and private label

The minimum is 200 pieces per style, per colour. One print can run in several dress shapes, and a dress can share its artwork with a matching scarf or top. We sew your brand label, add care labels and swing tags, and pack each dress folded and bagged or on a hanger. Our minimum order quantity page explains the rules across products.

How an order runs

  1. Brief: you send photos, a sketch, a tech pack or style numbers from our range, with your artwork, colours and quantities.
  2. Artwork and strike-offs: we prepare the repeat or placement and print strike-offs on the chosen fabric for your colour approval.
  3. Sample approval: we make a sample in the approved print, fit and trims, and revise until you approve it.
  4. Bulk production: fabric printing, cutting, sewing and finishing begin once the sample and colours are signed off.
  5. Inspection: we check print alignment, colour against the approved strike-off, measurements and workmanship during production and before packing.
  6. Packing and export documents: dresses are packed and labelled to your instructions, and we prepare the export paperwork.
