A kaftan has almost nothing to look at in the way it is cut. It hangs from the shoulders, the side seams run straight or nearly so, and there is no bust dart, waist seam or set sleeve head to carry the eye. Decoration does the work that shaping does in a fitted garment. That is the practical reason mga kaftan carry a wider range of embellishment than the other things we make — it is the only category where tassels, embroidery and pom-pom trim all turn up.
Each option changes the garment in a different way, and each one commits you to something on the care label. Here is what the common ones actually do.
Tassels
Tassels are the most common embellishment on the kaftans we make. They usually sit at the ends of a neck tie or drawcord, at the point of a front slit, or spaced along a hem or side split.
What a tassel does to the garment is local: weight and movement in one spot. A tassel at the bottom of a front slit pulls the opening straight and stops it riding up; tassels along a hem add a little swing. Nowhere else in the garment changes.
The durability question is almost entirely about the anchor. A tassel is attached at a single point, so all the strain from wearing, handling and washing concentrates into one small area of cloth. On a neck tie, the tassel is pulled every time the garment goes on and comes off. Whether the anchor is stitched into a seam, a bound edge or a doubled hem — somewhere with two or more layers to take the stitch — or into single-layer cloth makes a large difference to how long it survives. That belongs in the specification, not left open.
In the wash, tassels tangle. The skirt of a tassel wraps around itself and around whatever else is in the drum, and a tumble dryer frizzes and abrades the yarn ends. A tasselled isang biro realistically carries a hand-wash or wash-in-a-mesh-bag instruction, and no tumble drying.
Two more things to settle before bulk. The tassel yarn is usually a different fibre from the body cloth and always a different dye lot, so it can shrink at a different rate and it can bleed. Both are found by washing the trim together with the body fabric — not by washing them separately.
Pagbuburda
Embroidery adds thread mass to a defined area and perforates the ground while doing it. Both matter on a kaftan, because the ground is usually light — belo, lawn, georgette, rayon — and light cloth is what shows the strain.
What it does to the cloth
A densely filled motif is stiffer and heavier than the fabric around it. On a yoke that is often exactly what you want: it holds the shoulder line and keeps a very fluid cloth from collapsing at the neck. The same density at a hem or a sleeve opening reads as weight that drags. Open, linear work — outlines, running stitch, sparse motifs — adds pattern with very little change in hand.
Stitch tension pulls the ground in, so the fabric has to be held flat while it is stitched. That is the backing’s job, and the backing choice is constrained by the cloth. A cut-away backing stays in the garment permanently and goes on supporting the stitches through every wash; on a sheer or pale ground it shows through from the face and cannot be used. Tear-away and dissolving backings leave nothing behind once the stitching is done. So on a sheer kaftan ground there is a real ceiling on stitch density, and pushing past it gives you a puckered panel.
The second cause of puckering appears later. Polyester embroidery thread does not shrink; a cotton or viscose ground does. Embroider fabric that has not been shrunk, and the ground contracts around thread that does not, so the panel wrinkles after the first wash even though the sample lay flat. Pre-shrinking the fabric before it is embroidered is the fix, and it is a fabric-stage decision — it cannot be corrected at finishing.
Thread
Three thread types cover most kaftan embroidery, and they are not interchangeable:
- Polyester — the most wash-durable of the three. Highest tensile and abrasion resistance, holds colour well. The sensible default for anything that will be laundered often.
- viscose (rayon) — chosen for its sheen, and nothing else looks quite like it. It also has the lowest wet strength and the poorest abrasion resistance of the three, losing a large part of its strength while it is wet, which is precisely when it is being agitated. It suits decorative work on garments washed gently and infrequently. It is a poor choice for a piece a customer will machine wash every week.
- Cotton — matte rather than lustrous, and it sits with the ground rather than on top of it. Stronger wet than viscose, but it can shrink, and its dye fastness varies with the shade, so a dark thread on a pale ground needs a bleed test.
The back of the embroidery is part of the garment too. On an unlined sheer kaftan the reverse of the stitching is visible and it touches skin, and long floats on the back catch on rings and nails. A facing or a light lining behind the panel solves both, at the cost of an extra layer that changes how that part of the garment hangs.
Pom-pom trim
Pom-pom trim arrives as a continuous tape: the pom-poms are attached along a narrow woven header, and the header is what gets sewn in. On a kaftan it usually goes into a hem, a sleeve opening, a neck slit or a side split, caught into the seam or under a binding so the tape is hidden and only the pom-poms show.
Two things follow from that construction.
First, the trim is only as secure as the seam it is caught in, and the pom-poms sit outside that seam where they take all the abrasion. They rub against chairs, bag straps and the wearer, and they catch on things. That is not a fault; it is what a pom-pom is.
Second, the header tape is a second fabric with its own shrinkage rate, sewn in a straight line along an edge. If it shrinks less than the cloth it is attached to, the tape ends up longer than the edge and the hem ripples. If it shrinks more, it draws the hem in and the edge cups. Either way you get a wavy hem after the first wash on a garment that left flat. Washing the trim and the body fabric together before bulk is what catches it.
Fibre decides what the pom-poms look like after a few washes. Wool felts — agitation, heat and moisture mat the fibres together, and the pom-pom goes hard and shrinks. Cotton does not felt but loses loft and goes limp. Acrylic holds its shape best, which is why it is common, at the cost of a slightly synthetic lustre. As with tassels, the trim is dyed separately from the garment, so a strong colour against a pale ground is a bleed test before it is anything else.
One useful side effect: a trimmed hem is a weighted hem, and a weighted hem hangs straighter and behaves better in wind. On a very fluid kaftan that is a genuine improvement in how the garment sits, not only decoration.
Pagpi-print
Digital print
Digital printing is the only option here that decorates the cloth without adding anything to it. With reactive inks on cotton, the colour is fixed into the fibre by steaming and the unfixed dye is washed out, so the printed fabric handles and weighs essentially the same as it did before. For a garment whose whole appeal is that it moves, that is the point worth having: pattern with no penalty in drape.
The ink system is the thing to specify, because it decides the fastness:
- Reactive, on cotton and other cellulosics — the dye bonds chemically to the fibre. Good wash and rub fastness, no change in hand. It needs steaming and washing-off after printing, which is why it happens at the printing stage and cannot be added later.
- Disperse and sublimation, on polyester — the dye enters the fibre under heat. Very good wash fastness on polyester, and it works only on polyester and a few other synthetics, not on cotton.
- Pigment — the colour sits on the surface, held by a binder, and is cured rather than steamed and washed off. Simpler and cheaper, but it stiffens the surface slightly and its wash and rub fastness are lower. Colour rubbing off onto a pale bag strap is a pigment problem.
Because there are no screens, there is no per-colour cost and no repeat size to design around. That opens up two things screen printing cannot easily do: photographic and gradated artwork, and engineered placement — a border that sits exactly at the hem, a motif centred on the front panel, mirrored sleeves.
Engineered prints carry a cost that is easy to miss. The artwork has to be laid out to the pattern pieces, and re-laid for every size. The pieces can then only be cut where the print puts them, so they cannot be rotated or nested freely in the marker and fabric utilisation drops. The cloth is printed for that order rather than pulled from stock. None of that is a reason to avoid engineered prints; it is a reason to decide early, because it is not a change you can make once the fabric is printed.
One thing to check on a lightweight kaftan: inkjet lays colour on the face of the cloth, so the reverse reads paler than the face, more so on heavier fabric. On a loose garment, where a sleeve turns back or a hem lifts, the inside gets seen.
Block print
Hand block printing is a different proposition. The design is carved into wooden blocks, one block per colour, and stamped along the length of the fabric by hand, registered by eye against pitch marks.
The method produces the thing people want from it: no two repeats are identical, edges are soft, and colour density varies slightly with how much paste the block picked up and how hard it was struck. That also means the variation is inherent rather than a defect. It has to be agreed at approval — with a strike-off that shows the range of variation rather than one perfect impression — or it will come back as a quality complaint on the delivery it was designed into.
Two practical limits. Fine gradation is not available; block printing gives flat areas of colour, and every additional colour is another block and another pass. And fastness depends on which colourant system the printer uses, which varies, so it should be tested on the actual printed fabric rather than assumed from the technique.
The rule that ties all of these together
Anything you add to a garment is a second material with its own shrinkage rate and its own dye. Embroidery thread, a header tape, a tassel cord, a print binder — each is a component the body fabric has not been tested against.
Which leads to the part that most often gets settled too late: the care label is set by the least tolerant component in the garment, not by the body fabric. A cotton voile kaftan that would happily take a warm machine wash becomes a hand-wash garment the moment it carries viscose-thread embroidery, a wool pom-pom trim or a set of tassels. If the brief is a piece that has to survive weekly laundering, let that drive the embellishment choice rather than discovering it afterwards.
Choosing between them

These are the ones that come up most often on kaftans, not the whole field. Beading, mga sequin, applique, lace insertion and edging, crochet, cutwork, gota patti, zari, smocking and shibori all appear on kaftans too, and each raises the same two questions: what does it do to the hand and hang of the cloth, and what does it do to the care label.
What a specification should pin down
Naming the technique is not a specification. For any of these, the things that decide the outcome are:
- Where it sits on the garment, and what it is anchored into — a seam, a bound edge or a doubled hem rather than single-layer cloth.
- The fibre of the thread, trim or tassel yarn, chosen against the care label you intend to print, not the other way round.
- Whether the ground fabric is shrunk before it is embroidered or trimmed.
- A wash test of the trim together with the body fabric, for shrinkage and for colour bleed. Components washed separately tell you nothing about how they behave attached to each other.
- Para sa mga print, the ink system by name. For block prints, an approved strike-off that shows the range of variation you are accepting.
